I've selected many of the legends of mandolin, or CDs where they played prominently, because in my learning to play over these many years, these are the mandolin players I listened to and stole their licks, to then adopt/adapt them to my own style, feel and voice. Learning to play licks is one thing, but the difference here in then making them your own is the same difference as learning to play the mandolin is from learning to play music with the mandolin.
Your best music lesson is one where you are listening...this is one of many reasons God gave us all two (2) ears and one (1) mouth/voice, to be used in this proportion.
